Workshop will include instruction on the basic meditation practice of using the breath to develop samatha (tranquility and joy). Three basic skills: 1) mindfulness; 2) appropriate objects of attention; and 3) appropriate effort will be covered. Of course, we cannot ignore the context of real-life difficulties affecting the ability to accomplish these skills. Therefore, there will be a discussion of obstacles to concentration and a brief introduction to the insight aspect of meditation. Attending mediators will be welcome to present and lead in their own tradition. No minimum duration of meditation will be required. It simply is expected that people choosing to sit for shorter periods respect others by not being unnecessarily noisy. Chairs will be available or bring your own cushion. Those interested in beginning a meditation regime are welcome.
