February Exhibition at the Eccles Art Center Explores the Power of Black and White

Ogden, Utah — February 2026 — This February, the Eccles Art Center invites the public to experience the striking simplicity and expressive range of the Black and White Competition, presented simultaneously in both the Main Gallery and the Carriage House Gallery.

Featuring artwork created exclusively in black, white, and grayscale, this juried competition highlights how artists use contrast, value, texture, and form to create compelling visual statements without the use of color. From bold graphic compositions to subtle tonal explorations, the exhibition demonstrates that limitation can be a powerful catalyst for creativity.

The Black and White Competition brings together a diverse group of artists working across a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and mixed media. By stripping color from the equation, viewers are invited to focus more deeply on composition, craftsmanship, and conceptual intent.

By hosting the exhibition across two gallery spaces, the Eccles Art Center is able to showcase an expanded selection of work while offering visitors a cohesive yet varied viewing experience. Together, the Main Gallery and Carriage House Gallery create an immersive exploration of how artists interpret and push the boundaries of black-and-white imagery.

The exhibition is free and open to the public during regular gallery hours. Many of the artworks on display are available for purchase.

Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Saturday, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

An Opening Reception for the Black and White Competition will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., as part of Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll. The public is invited to enjoy the exhibition across both the Main Gallery and Carriage House Gallery, meet participating artists, and experience the Art Center during one of downtown Ogden’s most vibrant monthly arts events.
