The exhibit will open Friday, July 2nd and continue through Saturday, August 28th, 2010. During the same time period, the Carriage House Gallery will feature the art work of Kathy Stobaugh of North Ogden. A reception for Kathy Stobaugh, the artists of the Statewide Competition, and the public will be held July 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. in association with Ogden’s First Friday Art Stroll. Awards will be announced at the reception.

The 36th Annual Statewide, a juried competition, is comprised of recent works by resident Utah artists in all media except photography. Awards presented will include a monetary first, second, and third, as well as a purchase award. The Eccles Community Art Center's Board of Directors selects the purchase award. This acquired work of art (the purchase award) is added into the center's permanent collection. Works in Art Center's permanent collection are rotated throughout the auxiliary rooms, third floor gallery, and found in the sculpture garden as well as being the source of the art that is taken into local schools by the center's excellent docent program Art To Go.

Kathy Stobaugh indicates “Art is a personal expression. As an artist, I wish to communicate an emotional reaction to my surroundings, an interpretation of what I see and feel. The landscapes that surround us are Nature’s perfect collages – layers upon layers, assembled to perfection. When I am hiking, which I do almost every day, I get so excited by these layers and the collages start right then… in my head. Sometimes a painting has to be painted so I can make a print of it to tear up to place in the collage, sometimes, I need to take a photo to print and tear.

I created my first collage in a high school history class. Even though I have done many things since, collage still remains one of my favorite forms of expression whether it is done with a variety of materials or given the illusion with paint. The “process” involved in collage is what I enjoy as I solve problems and experiment with various materials.”

Stobaugh continues, “My connection to the outdoors, the desert and the mountains, lends itself to the expression I seek bordering on the abstract but is many times still recognizable. I encourage the viewer to bring to each piece of art their own experiences and emotions.”

Kathy Stobaugh has well as being an artist, is a retired elementary school educator and has trained as a yoga instructor. During the spring quarter, Kathy taught restorative yoga classes for the Eccles Community Art Center, we are anticipating her return in the fall.  See summer classes at Schedule
