African Dance: Introductory program of African-based movement/dance taught in an invigorating atmosphere. Move with polyrhythms, which are the basis of African dance and many other popular dance forms, such as hip hop and stomp. Explore the cultural significance of the dances. African–based movement is a great aerobic workout and it is fun! No experience is necessary. Any age is welcome. (Children may take class if accompanied by a parent.)
Instructor: Déjà Mitchell, B.S., Modern Dance, Utah State University. She has studied African dance and drumming for over 12 years with numerous renowned teachers.

Tribal Fusion Belly Dance: Learn the basic belly dance language. Feel sensual and strong. Tribal fusion belly dance is a blend of styles and cultures--from India, to North Africa, to New York urban. A fun, full-body workout that will make you feel transformed.
All levels and ages welcome.

Middle Eastern (Belly) Dance:Technique: A review of basic moves and steps used in Middle Eastern dance with emphasis on technique and simple combinations. Belly dance (in Arabic, “Raqs Sharki”, dance Oriental) is a fun way to socialize and benefit from physical activity. All levels, ages welcome.
Zuhra Zakiyah, Candace Baker, started belly dancing in high school. Ten years ago, she reconnected with her passion for the dance. She has studied locally, and has added to her education by attending a multitude of workshops with professional internationally known dancers. She has attended the Middle Eastern Music and Dance Camp in Mendocino. Zuhra has traveled through Egypt, Morocco and Turkey dancing informally many times with the locals. She is familiar with the different styles of Middle Eastern dance along with the rhythms and regions of many folk styles.

Tribal Rhythms: Drums: Explore the basics of drumming. Traditional African rhythms and djembe techniques will be taught. We will have a facilitated drum circle, so you can get playing and have fun!
High-quality African drums (djembes) and instruments will be supplied for class use. Or you may bring your own to play.

Diverse Arts:
Mad Science Summer Camps: Mad Science is offering four different weeks of camps. Each day of the camp will have its own exciting theme with lots of hands-on science fun for children ages 5 through 11 years old. All materials and equipment are supplied by Mad Science. A minimum of 10 students is required. The maximum is set at 25 students.

Journey to Outer Space: From our earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on space program sends children on a quest for exploration! Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel, and other cool space related activities. Includes many awesome science kits!

Virginia Tanner Creative Dance: The Virginia Tanner creative dance program focus is on the whole child. Through movement exploration, dancers reach progressive levels of physical skill and are taught the vocabulary of dance. Exploring the creativity and imagination of childhood, dancers have the opportunity to improvise, engage in creative problem solving and grow in cognitive, social and emotional ways as they interact in class. Each class has a musical accompanist to expose dancers to a variety of music genres. Throughout class, dancers will have the opportunity to incorporate art and art forms into their learning.

Creepy Crawlies and Things That Go Bump in the Night: Scales and Tails of Utah will bring an entertaining and interactive program which will include creepy crawlies (spiders and such) as well as reptiles (snakes, lizards and more). Participants will not only learn they will become involved! Join us!

Mad Science: Mad Science invites you to see how much fun hands-on science can be. Mad Science’s goal is to spark the curiosity of children in kindergarten through 6th grade (Ages: 5 through 11 years old) and instill a clear understanding of what science is really about and how it affects the world around us. All materials and equipment are supplied by Mad Science. A minimum registration of 10 students is required. The maximum is set at 25 students.

Winter Adventures in Art Camp: Students will draw and paint with a variety of materials including charcoal, pencil, watercolor, oil pastel, and colored pencil. Students should bring a watercolor set.

ADULT/CHILD:
Acrylic Painting & Design: Using bright colors and concentrating on creative design, students will paint their own 16”x20” canvas. They will explore design principles, using bold shapes and colors. They will be exposed to a variety of tools in completing their project, including brushes, rollers and other items with the acrylic paint medium. Students will paint borders around their paintings so framing will not be necessary. Each student will create and take home a beautiful piece of art. This is a perfect adult/child workshop to attend together.
A minimum of 7 students is required, with a maximum of 16 students per session. Supplies provided.

Watercolor: Students will explore the basics, the classical methods of using watercolor, as well as how to set yourself free - enjoy the freedom of this medium. Watercolor is the favorite medium of the instructor - she loves sharing its wonders with others. Students should bring a watercolor set.

Art Aprons: Children will decorate/design their own art apron. Using art supplies, children will create their own personalize art apron which they may use in the creation of art at the center or at home. These aprons turn out adorable and the children love to wear them. We recommend that children ages 5 and under be accompanied by an adult.

Master Artists: Young artists will become excited about art as the study the art of Picasso and other great modern artists. Students will learn about these artists, discuss and view their art. Then produce fun correlating works of art to take home. The class will be limited to 12 students, with a minimum of 5 needed. Supplies provided.

Children’s Watercolor: Autumn Color and Fall Landscapes: With artist, Jeanine Cobb students will explore how to put a watercolor landscape together. Each week students will be introduced to skills which will be used to complete a finished work by the end of the session. The class size will be kept small to allow students to receive individualized instruction. The class will be limited to 12 students, with a minimum of 5 needed. Supplies provided.

October 13 through November 3, 2010 Wednesdays, 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.
Ages 7 to 11 years old.
Tuition: $36 members, $39 nonmembers.
Class Policies: Advance registration is required for all classes; registration fees are required to be paid 10 days prior to the start date of the class/workshop. Space may be reserved by phone; the registration fees may be mailed or delivered to the art center. All classes have minimum and maximum enrollment. The Art Center reserves the right to cancel classes with low registration. Every effort is made to notify those registered of cancellations or postponements. Fees for canceled classes are fully refundable.
Withdrawals/Refunds: For multiple date classes, refunds will be made available for students withdrawing from classes within the first week, prior to the day of the second class. For single date classes refunds are available only if students withdraw one week prior to the class. Class fees after these dates are non-refundable. A $5.00 withdrawal processing fee may be charged.
